A long drive today, from Christchurch to Te Anau – around eight hours, but do-able and it enables us not to have to travel a long distance two days running, as tomorrow we are doing the overnight boat cruise on Milford Sound. It was a beautiful drive through some more amazing scenery (many of the locations for Lord of the Rings) – mountain passes that reminded us very much of the Scottish Highlands, but with less traffic. And lots of sheep. We’d been surprised on the North Island that there were lots of cattle, but fewer sheep than we expected as we all love NZ lamb.
Just approaching Queenstown, we stopped for a drink at the Kuwari bridge. Queenstown is known as the ‘adventure capital of New Zealand’ and is building a world-wide reputation as the place to go to for ‘adrenalin sports’. At the bridge, we watched some mad people bungy jump off the bridge. Not for either of us, and so Queenstown is not on our itinerary! Fun to watch though. Staying at another Top Ten cabin tonight – right on the edge of Lake Te Anau and both the cabin and the town are lovely. It’s raining heavily now (although stayed dry and fine all day, despite the forecast of rain) and Fiordland, as this area is known, is often wet (in fact, it’s one of the wettest places in the world) but it’s supposed to make it even more picturesque on the sound, as all the waterfalls will be in full flow. We’ll see tomorrow!
