Hair today

Friday 13th April 2007
Stayed around the pool today as we have a trip booked for tomorrow (found a nice quiet spot and even though this is a big resort, it’s easy to find quiet bits around either of the two pools). So as I’ve nothing interesting to tell you, I thought I’d muse a bit about haircuts. My hair is always a problem – too thick and grows too quickly and so I knew that I would need a few haircuts on this trip. Australia, no problem. No language problem, no style problem, had it coloured as well, she knew what I wanted, all ok. New Zealand: left it a bit late but knew I needed a haircut before we left Enlgish speaking countries. Only Greymouth (slightly dismal place, as I reported earlier) left so had it done there. Ok, but she insisted on using a razor so while it was alright at the time, as it’s grown, it’s been resembling Worzel Gummidge. Really couldn’t wait another week to have it cut, so this morning ventured into the hair salon here. Lovely lady. Spoke no English. Where was Jane with her good Spanish when I needed her? So, I very nervously took the chair (it would have been rude to walk out – I’m in her country, why should she have English when I don’t have Spanish). And it was a very long haircut, as in, it took a very long time. I think she was nervous too, so it came of millimetre by millimetre, which was fine, until it came to me trying to say ‘can you thin it out now please’. I found her thinning scissors in her wallet and pointed and so she snipped away. Result, a very strange haircut, but who cares, it will grow.
