To Tulum

Thursday 12th April 2007
Well it would be very easy to sink into this hotel culture. The room and balcony is good and we have about 95 (exaggeration) TV channels, some good books, permanent internet access, all our laundry washed and ironed for us, very high quality and varied food and drink on tap whenever we want it without lifting a finger, so we could just move in and never leave. Add that to beautifully landscaped gardens, the largest swimming pool you’ve ever seen (as well as something called ‘lazy river’ – exactly that a man-made ‘river’ circling the entire complex where people just float by on inflatables all day), a lovely beach fronting the Caribbean, sunshine and temperatures in the high 30s and you’ve got the picture (your idea of Hell, David?). However, today we decided to escape and took the local bus (a mini-bus shuttle service) into Tulum, the closest town. The ride was quite nice as we went through a couple of villages, that weren’t touristy and Tulum itself was ok, but a sort of crossroads-town, with a mixture of real shops and touristy shops. We had a good wander round, a cold drink and headed back to our temporary home, as the heat means we don’t want to be away from water for too long. We will go back to Tulum to visit the Mayan ruins which are right on the water’s edge (a few kms out of the town itself, so we didn’t see it today) and snorkel out to see the turtles. Sorry no pictures, forgot to take the camera.
PS: I'm swimming for England, skipping lunch but will still resemble a beached whale by the time we leave here (more than before, I mean).
